George the Hero Dog...
Doesn't have a happy ending but bravo to George for looking out for his people!
Tiny Terrier Saves 5 New Zealand Kids
WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A plucky Jack Russell terrier named George saved five children from two marauding pit bulls, but was so severely mauled in the fight that it had to be put down, its owner said Wednesday.
George was playing with the group of children as they returned home from buying sweets at a neighborhood shop in the small North Island town of Manaia last Sunday when the two pit bulls appeared and lunged toward them, Allan Gay said.
"George was brave - he took them on and he's not even a foot high," Gay told The Associated Press. "He jumped in on them, he tried to keep them off.
"If it wasn't for George, those kids would have copped it."
One of the children, Richard Rosewarne, 11, was quoted in the Taranaki Daily News on Wednesday as saying George fought with the pit bulls to keep them off his 4-year-old brother, Darryl.
"George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him - one on the head and the other on the back," Rosewarne said. "We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George."
But George was so badly mauled that a veterinarian had to put him down, Gay said.
South Taranaki District Council official Graham Young said the two pit bulls had been impounded, and likely would be put down because of the attack.
In New Zealand, owners of dogs judged to be too aggressive can be required to have them neutered and dogs involved in attacks are destroyed.
Comments
oh how sad for George and scary for those kids.
Owners of dogs like the attackers should take more heat than just getting their dogs neutered or destroyed. It's bad owners, not bad dogs. Well, some dogs are just born that way, like some people are, regardless of their breed. (or---in-breed)
My mixed pit Lucy is a big sweetheart and I think its got way more to do with the owners than the breed...although it does play a part. I've already had to take Luce to the Emergency vet b/c some unleashed asshole dog and her didn't get along. We were leashed...asshole wasn't. Cucking Funt owner!
We live on a dead end street not in a subdivision and all the white trash people let their dogs run loose. It pisses me off big time.
There was a comment in the CBC coverage of this story that's missing from many others, paraphrased as follows:
How strange. My first comment doesn't show up.
The CBC story on this incident had a comment that has not been carried in other coverage, as follows:
Yet again, an irresponsible owner is the cause of a dog attack. This owner is obviously a person who does not train or contain his/her dogs, and allows them to continue roaming after the first incident. This negligent owner then has the gall and displays tremendous irresponsibility by demanding that the taxpayers euthanize the dangerous dogs that the owner has created.
This owner should not be let off free and clear just because the dogs were destroyed. This person should be barred from ever owning a dog again. The irresponsibility displayed by this owner leads me to believe that this person will, through neglect and irresponsibility, continue to create dangerous dogs.
Breed is irrelevant. Owner responsibility is all.
This is sad for George! And a sad but lucky escape for the kids... Owners need to controll there dogs and keep them restrained. If they cant do that than your not a sutiable dog owner nor have the respect for the public or the younger generation.
This suxs and some dog owners just dont care about human rights nor the dogs. Theres been 2 much attacks on children and a number of deaths and then theres abuse on animals themselves... Its got to stop but whos gona stop it???
Rest in peace George :)xo
