Wrapping up the random day...
Forgot I had even taken this. It was in my "To Flickr" folder and saw it today when I was adding the pics from earlier today...
I must have been experimenting with the cam's settings cause its got a bit of wonky noise going on...but I still like this shot of some of downtown from the Boylan Street bridge...
Boy...nothing lets you know you're an amateur photog like going into an inflatable piece of art with all kinds of lights going on inside...translation - most of the pics sucked of Levity III...but it was still a cool experience and worth the $5.
A pretty decent crowd in both 'areas'...here's a section of the group waiting for the performance art...
First up was a visit to Levity III...which I'm not going to bother trying to describe. I'll let the experts do it...
From the Art on the Edge site:
A creation of England's Architects of Air, under the direction of Alan Parkinson, Levity III is a stimulating 10,000 square foot kaleidoscope of liquid light and color. Inspired by Gothic cathedrals and Islamic architecture, the luminarium is made up of labyrinthine tunnels and spacious domes which invite visitors to lose themselves in a complete sensory immersion. Installations by Architects of Air have received rave reviews throughout the world and have collectively drawn millions of awe-inspired visitors to experience these truly unique pieces of art.

Then it was time for a performance from Strange Fruit. It rocked!
Check out the Strange Fruit web site for more info...Definitely check them out if they are in your area. Heck, it was Free!Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Strange Fruit will captivate the audience as four cast members bend and sway, presenting Swoon! while perched atop flexible poles four meters in the air. Their work is a fusion of theatre, dance and circus. Originally based on the image of a field of wheat swaying in the breeze, the poles' extreme strength and flexibility allow performers to bow to impossible angles, swaying back and forth in a hypnotising dance as the audience looks up in wonder.
First up are the pics...and then a bit of shaky video to give you a better idea...Would have tried for more video and an exterior shot of Levity III...but me batteries died. :(
Enjoy!
DNA evidence cleared Dail after 18 years....18 YEARS...in prison. Being a white boy convicted of raping a 12 year old black girl....can you imagine?
Its a great article (although I think they should have touched more on the current legal battle he faces with his son's mother...she wants back child support out of the settlement reached) and I especially love when The News & Observer includes video/audio specials in their reports. Very well done...even though its short.I'd love to see a full length documentary on this whole sad story. The link in the box above will take you to the N&O's home page where you can click the picture featured above to get to the audio/video. Here's the link to the accompanying story....
Weird when you have those "I know exactly where I was when..." moments...and tonight and the next few days is one of those moment(s).
Decemeber 4th, 2002. We were warned that an ice storm was coming and that it could be bad...but I don't think anybody expected what we got.
All I really remember is waking up throughout the night to hearing trees/branches crashing and electrical transformers blowing (and looking out to see bright blue explosions). Woke the next morning to no electricity. And spent the next 6 days like this. SIX. Days! (except for the cruel cruel 20 minutes that Saturday evening..it came on and all was fine and then the lights s-l-o-w-l-y dimmed back out. Tears were flowing...and freezing on contact. In fact...me and my next door neighbor had to chase down one of the utility trucks in the neighborhood on that 7th day and made them fix us up. I was living over in Cameron Park and had nothing but the wood fireplace...which is more than a lot had. It was miserable! Walking outside that first morning was incredible. It looks like another hurricane had come through...but with sheets of ice still on everything....and you had to be careful because limbs were still dropping all of the place. I much prefer the 20 inches of snow we had back in 2000...but at least both kept me out of work for a good 3-4 days.
